Bail is the amount a suspect can pay to get out of jail until trial. It is determined by a bail bond schedule, and/or a judge based on the severity of the crime. 

A judge will set bail for the accused. If the defendant pays bail, they will be allowed to stay out of jail and await trial from home. If the defendant cannot afford bail, their friend/family can help get them out by hiring a professional bail bondsman. 

In order for a bail bondsman to be able to help, they will need the following information:

• What is the full name and booking number of the accused?
• Where is the individual in custody?
• What was the individual accused of doing?
• How much is the bail?

In short, yes, bail bondsmen do accept collateral. Below outlines examples of acceptable collateral:

• Jewelry
• Credit Cards
• Stock
• Real Estate
• Cars

The amount of time it takes to post a bail bond depends on the case. A professional bail bondsman may be able to get a defendant out of jail on bail in a matter of 30 minutes, or it can take longer. If the suspect is arrested for a crime while out on bail awaiting trail for their previous crimes, the bond has the potential to be surrendered. You can still get the suspect out on bail again, but now you will have to pay for two new bonds and two new premiums.

Many people believe that they will get their money back after the trial is over. However, this is usually not the case. You will not get your premium back. The only time that a bail bondsman is required to provide a refund is if he/she cannot successfully get the accused out of jail.
